He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be shaken. Psalm 62:2
I found them in a small box when I was cleaning out a closet: stones and small rocks of all sizes and color; variant heart shaped ones, those with striation resembling a cross, pure white ones that came from a beach or driveway gravel even, and some glittering with tiny glass-like mirrors from the mica within – all treasures given to me by my children years ago, and my grandchildren over the past eight years. Looking at them collectively, all are still the same, unchanged by time or location, but the details of the memories of little hands giving them to me during everyday walks, vacations at the beach, etc., were all blended into one feeling of overwhelming love. What was disturbing was my inability to recollect those specific moments each child had brought to me, that at the time I believed I would recall down to the last detail. It was not possible! I could not remember which child’s name was associated with each rock. There were too many events, too many details, too much life lived in between those moments, and I regretted that those memories had not been written down.
It got me to thinking about our God. He is the same always. It does not matter what day or year or moment it is, or what life is bringing our way; He is God. (Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8) But we can in our busy-ness blend moments that blur Him out; moments filled with other things that keep Him boxed in a corner, not included in our everyday life, as He should be. We can lose sight of the good things He is doing to fill our lives with moments of love. My friend Steve Givens, suggested in his blog ( http://givenscreative.com/2015/01/the-creative-spirit-savoring-the-moment/) to keep a blessing journal – to take a moment or two each day and jot down something to be grateful for. What a blessing this has been to me! For within every day, no matter the challenges life brings, woven in is always something good to be found. Give it a try.
God of everlasting love, help us see your goodness in each and every day of our lives.
