People can do nothing better than to eat and drink, and find
satisfaction in their toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for
without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? Ecclesiastes 2:24-25
It is Thanksgiving Day! Those of us fortunate enough, take a step back from our toil and enjoy a dinner filled with gratitude in the company of loved ones and friends. In our family, after a special blessing and prayer of thanksgiving (usually spoken by the oldest member at the table), along with petitions spoken for those in need, we enjoy a banquet full of choice food and drink that is comprised of special dishes made by those at the table. One person makes the “best” sweet potato casserole. One is known for his homemade cranberry sauce and outstanding turkey! Another one creates a yummy green bean dish, someone else’s pies we just couldn’t have Thanksgiving without, and then there’s another family member whose chocolate cake has become the hit at every gathering. In the busyness of all their lives, time is taken to cook these special foods for all to enjoy. Even the little ones get involved with the feast, helping to bake special cookies and treats to be shared. We take this time to enjoy these delicious “fruits of our labors” as we feast also on the presence of those we love.
From the oldest member of the family to the smallest child, together we share with gratitude to God our being together. We take this time to reflect on the problems we have overcome during the past year, the sufferings some are coping with presently and reminisce about those no longer with us. By the end of the meal, not only have we been more than satisfied with the bounty enjoyed, but through this sharing of food and fellowship, there is renewed appreciation felt for all the good things God has blessed us with. The enjoyment we have had in this special gift of just being all together in this atmosphere of unconditional love, give us recognition of the treasure we have in our love for one another, and we are filled beyond measure.
As we approach God’s table, let us remember that each one of us has something unique and special to bring to His table. And more importantly on this Thanksgiving Day, whether we share this special time with one or a hundred people, let us take the time to turn to Him with praise and gratitude for all that has been given to us. May we unconditionally give back to Him all He waits to receive from us.
For our precious family and friends; those present and those gone before us who were instrumental in shaping our lives and faith; for all you have given us, we thank you Lord!
To all of you, my dear Blog Friends, thank you for the part you play in making my life filled with His love – I thank God for you and pray that He will bless you and your families with every good thing, on this Thanksgiving Day and always.
