Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. Genesis 1:3
Is anyone else having difficulty adjusting to the new energy saving incandescent light bulbs we now have available to us? I sure am! There just seems to be so many to choose from! Some take their time before showing their full light, slowly brightening over time, as they need to become warmed with electricity before doing so. Others are quick to flash their brightness – it’s almost a surprise, every time the light is turned on! Even the coloration affects our surroundings. Some have a yellowish, warm glow, others are cool, blue-bright and some even worse, are glaringly stark white, almost to the point that one needs to shield their eyes for protection from the glare! God bless one of our sons-in-law, who has provided us with a variety to try, and has not given up in his attempts to find just the right bulb that is comfortable to our eyes and our surroundings! It seemed so easy with the old fashioned ones we’ve had forever and were used to. We could count on replacing what we had with the same, and knew exactly what we were getting. Now, as with the replacement of many old standbys with new and more efficient products, it seems quite different - to me anyway. But, I am adjusting!
These light bulbs got me to thinking about the different personalities in our lives, the variety of temperaments we are surrounded with and how we are affected by them, never mind which one is representative of us! How our “light” does influence one another! And aren’t there times we all change like a “light bulb,” sometimes from one moment to the next? We all prefer certain personality traits to surround ourselves with, yet all the others, along with their various shades of luminosity, are part of our lives: our families, friends, co-workers, etc. And although it’s wonderful to be able to count on the familiar nature of certain individuals, still, we have to adjust to the brightness or lack of it, the sameness or constantly changing hues of all, if we want to remain in a comfortable place with them. That being said, there is a time to shield our eyes from certain kinds of light, for God gives light to all of us - those with mal intent included. (Proverbs 29:13)
It is hard to imagine a time when there was absolute darkness in this world, yet we are told there once was. Having the power go out after the sun goes down, we experience a tiny glimpse of that. We feel that little bit of fear and emptiness without light; and don’t we all scramble to find matches for our candles, or search out battery operated lanterns, or flashlights - anything, for some glimmer of light for our eyes to focus on, to once again warm a room - for we are so accustomed to having light around us? We are not picky about the kind of light either; we just yearn for the comfort and nearness of light. Once the power is back on, what kind of light bulb becomes irrelevant! We are just grateful to once again have light! In the same way, we can view the light reflecting from the people around us, and recognize their light as a unique beam from God, meant for us to be warmed with, fill our emptiness and gaze upon with gratitude.
For the beams of light you send our way, we thank you God! They remind us that in You, there is no darkness.
