“O that my vexation were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances!
Job 6:2
When our children were little and went through that picky eating stretch of time, I remember reading a book by a nutritionist, who believed that over an entire week most kids actually eat a balanced diet on their own. She suggested writing down everything that child ate over one week and evaluate it at the end. Interestingly enough that philosophy held true nearly all the time! After that, I relaxed a bit and tried not to be overly concerned with the content eaten at their meals throughout the day.
When I was growing up, my mother had an expression that she used constantly and it was her advice for many things. “Everything comes out in the wash!” It drove me crazy then! Yet the more life is experienced, that too, seems quite true! Over time, things have a way of working out, of correcting themselves, of coming clean and being balanced out by life in its entirety. It is thought provoking and gives me reason to stand back and wait some things through. Take a deep breath and let life evolve as it is meant to.
As simplistic as this may sound, we all know it sure isn’t easy. It isn’t easy when life’s events are pulling at us to make quick decisions and NOW! It isn’t easy when we’re feeling suffocated by circumstances we have no control over, yet are expected by others to have a solution for. At the same time, that is exactly what we need to do: step back; look at things from another perspective, one that is considering the whole picture, not just one piece of it; do our best to let go and let God do His work.
Poor Job! Completely overwhelmed and grieving all his loss, at this point in Scripture certainly was not able to see the whole picture; deeply feeling that if measured by weight, his catastrophes would tip the scales! He believed God had abandoned him! We are no different! It is easier when looking back to see the whole picture, to see how it all fit and balanced out. But when we are in it up to our necks, how many times have we felt God has abandoned us - left us to deal with our situations alone? With faith, we know God will not abandon us. In time, all things will weigh out to our benefit. Why? Because we are His and He has promised that He is with us always (Matthew 28:20).
Abba! Father! God of all creation! We are yours!
