December 11
I lead them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To
them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent
down to feed them. Hosea 11:4
The youngest member of our family, our little grandson Matthew crawled around on the living floor, glancing up at me with a grin all the while, making my heart swell with immeasurable love. Then he reached for me with his little hand slightly raised, but the look in his eyes told me everything, it was time to eat! It was time for this hungry little guy to have his lunch, and how he knew it! His insistence grew rapidly when I was not fast enough for him! Sweeping him up into my arms, instinctively I held him close to my cheek, and kissed his little head. So close to me, such a part of me, and I think about how amazing it is that we have this ability to love so intensely in such a short period of time. Blessed with four other little grandchildren who fill my heart and arms with immense love and joy; their lives radiate an unconditional love toward me that is indescribable. It continues to astound me how the love in my heart just multiplies and multiplies every time a new life is added to our family! And somehow just when I feel I could not love more deeply, when I am with them I find myself consumed with even more; a love that not only is enough to go around with plenty left over, but just keeps growing! Could this is be in a small way, similar to how God, our Father feels toward each one of us? It is awe-inspiring to think about!
I popped little Matthew into his seat, and as I bent down to feed his waiting little mouth, I thought about this scripture; envisioning God feeding us with food to nourish our souls. We wait for Him, but just maybe we should demand like a little child! He tells us in Scripture to come before Him like children (Matthew 18:3); to ask and we will receive, that He is there ready to feed our willing and open hearts. He waits for us to be present with Him now and to ask for what we need. He waits for us to be aware of the love He showers upon us. We are told that He lifts us up and as we are held close to His cheek, He embraces us in His loving arms. Just like the love we feel for the members of our family here on earth, our Lord tells us that with invisible cords of love, our hearts are tied closely together with His. How can our hearts not swell with immeasurable love for Him?
Abba! Father! We are yours! Hold us close and nourish our souls with your Holy Spirit!
