When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. As the company of prophets was sitting before him, he said to his servant, “Put the large pot on and make some stew for the company of prophets.” 2 Kings 4:38
In my possession is a large pot that once was my Mother’s and it is something I treasure. It’s nothing fancy; in fact it’s just a simple aluminum pot that most likely was purchased in a five and dime store. Battered and marked up, it even has some burnt spots on the outside bottom that have resisted removal, no matter what I’ve tried. Those markings have become an integral part of that pot, but that’s okay to me, for each spot and dent represents a memory of days gone by.
I remember being small and using a large spoon to make this pot my own musical instrument as did my younger siblings, and eventually my own children. When Mom would take this huge pot out, as a kid it meant one of two things: she was about to make her yummy meatballs and sauce, with the delicious aroma that would tantalize us all day or we were having company and it would be filled with something delectable for us all to enjoy together. Also, every holiday, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas, the ritual of making her secret recipe stuffing for the turkey she would roast, would begin the night before, with her taking out that special pot and using it to hold and mix the crumbled up bread and soda crackers necessary to start the process. We kids would all gather around anxiously awaiting for our turn to help break that bread apart!
Now years later, I take out that pot and do the same, and little hands still help. And I’ve learned that somehow, there is always enough. Just like back in the day, no matter how many people were there or how little my Mother had to start out with, there was always sufficient to go around. And still there is today. How good is our God!
Your love fills us Lord and that is enough! We are grateful!
