November 20
Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield. Psalm 33:20
It is mid November and our New England nights have already brought us freezing temperatures. I shuffle about my kitchen preparing for the day, feeling a bit stressed about many things, never mind all that needs to be attended to before Thanksgiving, when something very bright, in the corner by the sink, catches my attention! Yellow flowers with their heads upright and glowing, caught up in the dazzling early morning sunshine cascading through the window! I couldn’t help but smile! Last week these buds were spotted at the back of my yard, bent over searching for warmth on that brisk, cold day. Without thinking, I snipped them off, brought them inside and placed them in a half full glass of water on the counter. Daily I changed the water and that is all the attention they got, save for the many glances they got from me as I considered putting them in the compost pile. Now, here they were in all their glory bringing me happiness. All the while they were slowly coming to a full bloom, so slowly I barely noticed.
So like so many people and events in our lives, so like us; each coming to fruition in God’s time, not ours; each developing slowly into that which God has planned. How this makes me stop and consider all the times I wanted to give up on someone or something. How many times I thought I could control an outcome if I just worked harder or longer? Yes, God may use our hands to help with his work here, but it is in His time not ours that all becomes His finished work.
How those yellow blooms have brought hope to my heart on this cold November morning, for they remind me that every thing is part of a much greater plan, a plan that is coming to completion, all the while we wait for the Lord!
Forgive our impatience while we wait for You, Lord. It is hard sometimes to see the plan You have for our lives and Your hand in all things.
