If you seek it like silver, and search as for hidden treasures – Proverbs 2:4
Does it ever happen at your house that in the laundry socks somehow disappear? I imagine that somewhere out there, there is a stash of socks with no match, no mate, just waiting to be found; an elusive pile of many colors and sizes! Or could it be that there some sort of sock monster in our midst that sustains itself on socks? My children used to think that!
Suddenly one day as you place your hand through the sleeve of a shirt, or your foot through a pant leg, voila! Something is sticking to the inside . . . . behold a lost sock is found! Along with the surprised response and the mental note to increase the fabric softener, comes a feeling of happiness and satisfaction knowing that at least one pair is complete again! And it always feels good - just as it does when anything in our lives is matched up well with whom we are or hope to be.
Like the many good deeds we pile up along the way, without giving a second thought. More often than not, we never get to see the other half, the other side of the many little things we do each day out of love and caring. Often done spontaneously, it’s not until we may be unexpectedly privy to the effects of our action, that we become aware of how good we feel. Those moments help us to continue to reach out, even when we’re up to our elbows and knees with stuff we’d rather not be involved with.
These are some of the treasures we are storing up in heaven; these are part of the laundry list of stuff that matters most in life. And when we see that pile of many colors and sizes, what a surprise it will be to see that we carried the other half of each of them in our hearts until it was time for them to be complete!
Heavenly Father, thank you for the many opportunities we have to do your work each and every day.
