March 20
Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20
The door bell rings and the knocking on the front door gets louder and more persistent. Without a doubt, I instantly know, whoever it is really wants me to open that door! But, I am not presentable! The morning has been busy and flown right by me. I’ve barely had enough time to wash my face, let alone dress properly! What to do? Swallow my pride and open the door despite my embarrassment, or hope whoever it is will go away! Suddenly I hear my name being called and recognizing the voice I am thrilled! Very quickly my appearance no longer matters. The person on the other side of that door knows me and they don’t care what I look like, and neither do I. They know me so well that they accept me and love me just as I am, and I am grateful they took the time to come to my home just to be with me. Next thing the teapot is whistling and the coffee is brewing. To sit down with them and share a meal and talk is wonderful! As they seek my guidance in solving a current problem or just chat about what has been going on in their life, our shared closeness grows. I cannot help but feel at one with this person, and as the conversation continues, time is irrelevant. Long after they have gone home, the uplifted feeling continues just by having been present with them, and I think, “What if I hadn’t opened that door for whatever reason?” What I would have missed!
Our Lord is constantly knocking at the door of our lives and giving us the opportunity to open it to Him. He knows us! He knows our heart and soul. Like a good friend or family member, He wants to come in and be with us, to listen and to chat. He cares about what is on our mind. He wants us to share our problems and joys with Him. He wants us to be at table with Him. He wants to lift our spirits higher and higher. Yet in our unpreparedness, how we hesitate! In our embarrassment, we wait for a time when we are in a better state. In our busyness we put Him off. Oh! What we miss! What to do? Remember that He loves us just as we are! There is no need to hesitate; do you hear Him calling your name?
May we eagerly open the door to you, dear God, so you can come in and be with us!
