. . . you anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Psalm 23:5
When my grandchildren are visiting, it’s important to me to allow them the opportunity to do for themselves whatever they are attempting to do, with as little assistance as possible. Observing them brings me so much joy! (Even when I know it means cleaning up!) Three of them are only weeks apart and when they were about 2 ½ or 3, each wanted to pour their own milk or juice into their cups. Inevitably a portion landed on the table or the floor. But as time went by, they soon mastered that skill and became more proficient than I it seems! In addition, incorporating their help while wiping up those spills encouraged the teaching they were getting at home about assisting with maintaining their environment. However it is the image of that overflowing liquid that I will always remember, for it would spread and cover an area quickly as it dripped to the floor, making another puddle that Maizy would run to in an effort to lap it up before we got to it. That little bit went quite a distance! That little bit seemed to multiply before my eyes! Now I think about what abundance clearly was present, for me to risk losing what should have been consumed! Yet there was always enough
One time we were baking, and as the vegetable oil was being measured out into a cup, over the bottle went, and guess who got it on the head? Yes Maizy, who had quietly snuck into the kitchen hoping for some morsel to fall. Well, she hit the jackpot that day! As I quickly removed her from the room, her furry head dripping with oil, it became evident that the oil was now dripping in another room, for what was visible on the top of her head was nothing compared to what had seeped beneath her fur! What a mess! And even though we laughed about it later, Grammie was pretty busy that day, cleaning up two rooms as well as the dog! Still, the baking got done and what fun we had! There was more than enough.
I think sometimes like the oil hidden under Maizy’s fur, or the little bit of milk that drips into a good sized puddle, we are unable to see just how much of overflow God has presented us with. Whether it is a food item, love, friendship, encouragement, joy, ability, support, faith, and on and on I could go, God has given us so much and clearly tells us in Psalm 23, that what He gives us will cover all areas of our lives; from birth to death, through hardships and happy, joyous days, for with His open hand ready to fill the cups we hold, He is there with every good thing we need. There will always be more than enough.
For the plenitude that is ours we thank you God! Abba! Father! We are yours!
