Cast your burden on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalm 55:22
To shed something, throw, dismiss from the mind, carry something ashore, to perform as part of a group, to mold something, a support for bones, etc. The word cast has many meanings, nearly all of which fit this passage!
How many times and in how many ways do we need to hand our concerns and cares over to God? On how many occasions do we vigorously want to throw our troubles away, unable to get them from ourselves fast enough? Then again, how much more frequently do we keep them to ourselves, struggling and feeling helpless; wasting our energy, our time and our lives? If you have ever been in the company of someone who becomes completely overwhelmed when faced with a life challenge, you know first hand how everyone around that person is affected by that person’s helplessness, and try in whatever way they can to help them carry on through their crises. Like martyrs too, some of us even wear burdens like a badge of courage! It doesn’t matter how we give our troubles to God, and it doesn’t matter to Him how slight or how large those cares given to Him are. What is important is that we do give them to Him. Why? Because He tells us to! He wants us to trust that out of His love for us, He is readily available to help us; there is nothing we have to face alone.
Habitually worrying has the ability to create an introspection that borders on selfishness. By shedding our worries, we are safely carried in His arms back to the shores of life. With God’s help, opportunities and solutions to our problems will present themselves for us to act upon. When our peace and confidence are restored, hope is renewed and we are subsequently more capable of focusing on living life to its fullest, focusing on others rather than ourselves.
For many years, one of our children had to wear casts at night to help straighten and support limbs as they grew. In the same way a cast sustains a broken or weakened bone, keeps it immovable, straight and aids in its healing, we are upheld by God’s constant love. He tells us it is immovable! And we are supported and strengthened. No longer are we shaken by concerns, for we know that He is there to carry them for us. With His strength supporting us, we can freely go forward. Cast all your cares to Him!
Father! Thank you for carrying all the burdens that we encounter as we travel through life. May we remember always to turn to you first, before our worries and cares weigh us down.
