According to the commission of God given to me, like a
skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and another man is
building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it.
I Corinthians 3:10
For years, we dreamed about the addition we wanted on the back of our home; a sunroom, that would be filled with light, morning and afternoon! We hoped for a place where we could convene with nature, and gather as a family or go by ourselves to relax. When the time finally presented itself for the building to begin, how excited we were, but I for one, had no idea just what length of time each step of construction would encompass! It was autumn when all permits were finally in place and the foundation was started. What a process! Every effort was made to stay ahead of our fickle New England weather; warm as toast one day and freezing the next! Just in time, before the snow flew, the foundation was set by one group of people; the sides and roof were constructed by others, and braced to face the winter ahead. Our future sunroom was enclosed; but at this point, with no windows, doors, wiring or heat, it looked nothing like I had imagined it to be!
Each area of expertise was provided by a different person or group of people, chosen by us for their outstanding skills. After a cold winter, and much patience, spring arrived and the building of our room continued, with the finishing work carefully and painstakingly performed. But, without the strong foundation placed so many months before and now hardened and strong, this room would not be held up, held in place. It would not withstand the activity of life, inside or out. This foundation and all that was constructed upon it, which took so much time to complete, enables all the life that comes and goes in our room to continue safely.
So like our faith in God! The foundation we have, was placed by the Holy Spirit, made strong by the teachings of Christ and braced up, like new walls in a building, by those people of faith who surround us. The finishing work is ours, and we have to choose carefully and wisely to sustain our life of faith - to build upon what we have, so His light can beam through us too. But most of all, we can’t even begin to imagine the beauty of it, until our “building” is complete!
Heavenly Father, help us to choose wisely, those who influence the building up of our faith.
