For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of the darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6
On the bow of a ship heading into Boston, on a misty cool August morning, the sun not yet above the horizon, the damp wind blowing in my face, the only thing visible were the waves cascading off the bow directly in front of us. Then, out of the darkness, way in the distance, a light! The light from Boston Light, a lighthouse on Brewster Island off our coast, welcoming us home! Of more importance though, the ship was being given direction; we were on course. I found myself going back in time and remembering another beacon of light that had a significant impact on my life.
From every window I looked out, there was a view of the “Twin Lights” on Thacher Island off the coast of Rockport, MA. I was a teen, babysitting for a family during my free time from a very challenging girls’ school I attended. This family was absolutely wonderful to me! Aware that I came from a large family, they offered solitude and a peaceful environment. There began my journey of introspection and appreciation of the calming and centering properties of the sea. Those lighthouses that were a constant visible part of my time there, captivated me and seemed to draw me in. For hours I could sit on the rock jetty in front of their home, gazing out at the lights, thinking and thinking. No matter how dark it was, or how much fog rolled in, or how much rain or snow there may be falling, still those lights shone through. I felt safe and secure, anchored and connected. In my solitude, I never felt “alone,” surprising, for I was accustomed to always having someone with me. There was no need for a compass either, as I walked throughout this area that in the beginning was totally unfamiliar to me.
Today still, lighthouses fascinate me beyond words! Over the years Roger and I have visited many while visiting seacoast areas, and whenever we're near the sea, always search for the familiar flash. Like the Beacon of Light offered to us by God, for many of us they are reminiscent of His presence; giving us direction, offering us an anchor and guiding us home.
Lord of our souls guide us in your loving Light.
