But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will
rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-
fed calves. Malachi 4:2
Two weeks after surgery, with great difficulty and my husband's assistance, I finally managed to make it down the stairs to our patio. It was early fall and the sun was just coming up, beaconing me to meet with it in its glorious rise. Autumn, my favorite time of year, had flown right past me, I felt. But, much to my amazement, some of the flowers in the garden were still blooming; in fact the first thing I noticed were our exquisite sun-yellow roses blossoming again! Typically they only bloomed once a season and they had weeks ago! What a surprise; a gift I felt was definitely for my benefit! As I inhaled the sweet subtle scent of their beauty, the warmth and bright illumination of the sun washed over me; I was overcome with emotion. After all I had been through for so long, it was overwhelming to once again stand outside in the middle of autumn's reverie ; to feel the sun's rays heat my skin and to soak it up and to breathe in the fresh, crisp fall air. It was a deeply appreciated accomplishment and reawakening of the senses, one I will never take for granted again. The comforting, healing rays of the sun seemed to permeate every cell in my body, its brilliant light filled me with hope and somehow I knew at that moment that I would heal.
Every sunrise is a miracle from God. Every sunrise signals a new day dawning, another chance at life; a new beginning, a clean slate, endless opportunity – a precious gift from God, there for us to make an imprint of in our hearts and minds, to savor and make the most of, and to remember - so it may sustain our spiritual well-being. It is a sign of God’s faithful love to us, His reliability. How the sun's light and warmth is essential to our physical well-being by providing food to sustain us, keeping us well-fed! It is perhaps the greatest of gifts He provides for us, besides water, for without the sun there would be nothingness, no opportunity for any life to continue for any of His creation.
Thinking about the sun and all its qualities and benefits to us, makes me consider how it symbolizes what God does for us! It is easy to understand how the ancients considered it a god. Without God there is nothingness. He is our Light and salvation; our God, who sustains us with spiritual food to nourish and strengthen us, so we will not get discouraged. There always, He waits for us to reach for Him in all circumstances.
Every sunrise provides the opportunity to start over with trust, to heal and to cherish life with gratitude, so that we may frolic and dance to the song of our lives.
Thank you for the sunrise, God; for the healing hope and joy each one brings to our hearts, bodies, and spirits; and for the miracle of blooming roses too!
