He delivers and rescues, he works signs and wonders in heaven and on
Earth; Daniel 6:27
It was another scorcher of a day with the temps reaching the nineties. Weary from the day’s events, I slipped out the back door into the quietness of the evening to water my plants in the dimming light, as my tired husband slept in his recliner in front of the television. There wasn't a sound outside; in fact our neighborhood seemed almost too quiet. I couldn’t help but think that on a sultry evening like this, when our children were young, there would be sounds of laughter and giggles echoing throughout the trees and yards, and the light from their flashlights would be glimmering through the leaves and bouncing off favorite hiding places, as they played hide and seek outside with their friends. But today, it seems everyone is inside, cool in their air conditioning, entertained by various media sources – even the kids. At the same time I appreciated this treasured moment of solitude as well as the lack of white noise that has become the background music to our lives these days, and I began to feel the tension leave my body.
My thoughts swirled. How worn out my husband and I are with many decisions we're facing, many challenges that have drained us. All I need is some sign that we are on the right path; something to affirm the hope that has always supported my optimism but now at times, feels to be emptying out of me. Then, as I poured water on my beautifully blooming, yellow rose bush, out of the corner of my eye, I saw it! A tiny flicker of light! Again it happened - another little flicker, then another tiny flash! Fireflies! One after another they signaled with their sparks of light as the water splashed; tiny bursts of luminosity that made my heart soar and filled me with joy! Like little stars beaming their heavenly light down upon us, these little creatures brought me back to more simple times, to feeling awe over the small, everyday things gifted to us by our God. While their little lights filled me with wonder, peace grew within me and renewed hope began to fill my soul.
Thank you God for all the simple signs and wonders that you place before us, all of which renew our spirits and center us, again and again.
