January 14
Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and
in faithfulness; Joshua 24:14
Day by day we observe them. People serving food with warm smiles and efficient hands in shelters across the city; volunteers in hospitals gently transporting patients to their destinations or carrying flowers and mail to hurting people; the crossing guard holding the hands of nervous little ones with reassurance as they cross the intersection on their way to school; the citizens who quietly maintain the graves of forgotten fallen heroes of past wars; the Eucharistic Ministers who bring Christ’s light to the infirm; the thoughtful neighbors who pick up the trash containers of busy working people and put them away for them; the parents who “go without” so their children will “have”; the animal lovers who notice the homeless cat or dog in the area and then take care of the welfare of the animal; the people in a city or town who plant flowers and trees in various places to beautify the spot; the teens who take a Saturday and clean out a vacant lot and start a garden there; aware neighbors who assist the elderly with their grocery bags and yard care; ordinary people heroically helping someone after an accident; little ones with their hands raised offering scribbled love notes; young and old who offer to us their gifts of music, volunteers who work to better the lives of those in third world countries; firemen, police officers, those bravely serving our country and every day citizens selflessly giving their lives for others; these are just a few ways we see people serving our Lord.
In ordinary and in extraordinary ways God is served in faithfulness. Sometimes we underestimate the small acts of love we do and see each day. All, done with a sincere heart and done in God’s name, is done in service for God. And don’t you agree that each act really is extraordinary? Look around you today and witness the beauty of those who serve the Lord faithfully. Don’t you see yourself?
Lord may our every act of kindness be in your name.
