“For the son of man came to seek and to save what was lost.”
Luke 19:10
One of the “Good News” segments on television recently portrayed a man who utilizes something he received as a gift, for the good of others. A small metal detecting device! Along the sandy beaches of New England, for hours upon hours he walks, allowing the tool to work, seeking out any metal treasures that may be hidden amidst the mounds of sand. Time and time again he has located items that have deep meaning to the people who have lost them and thought they would never see again. Daily he seeks what is hidden and as he told it, is thrilled when he finds that one piece that has identifiable markings on it, enabling him to return the item to the owner or to a surviving family member. Typically, with utter surprise and tears of joy, they receive his precious gift, this long lost heirloom treasure, tenderly turning it over and over in their hands and looking at it in disbelief! For him, the reward received for returning what is rightfully theirs, is the happiness he sees in their faces. To think that had he not the desire to carefully search through the sand, none of these things would have been found.
Luke tells us the Jesus seeks out what is lost; what is missing is most valuable to Him, so much so, that He carefully searches for them until found, for they are precious to Him, irreplaceable. He seeks out those who need encouragement. He seeks out those who need his presence to be healed, and to believe, and to turn their lives around. He seeks out each of us, then tenderly holds us close!
Little things can get hidden amongst the bigness of life; little things that can hurt us like the discomfort of a grain of sand in a shoe; little things that can cause us to lose our way. When these little things are revealed to
us by God, we are given the opportunity to turn things around, to take this heirloom gift and hold it tightly and to treasure it. Just as receiving back a precious item that we never thought we would see or hold again fills us with joy, we can now have gladness in our hearts, for we have allowed Jesus’ love to save us. We have opened our hearts and received His gift to us - our inheritance – eternal life!
You personally seek us out when we are lost and constantly remind us that we are important to you! How we thank you dear heavenly Father!
