And take care not to be slack in this matter . . . Ezra 4:22
When push comes to shove, how quickly we can move in response to a matter that needs urgent attention! But when given a choice to follow through on an unpleasant task that can be attended to now or later, more often than not most of us would choose later. It is human nature it seems, to put off difficult tasks. How many of us delay performing the ordinary, every-day ones at times? Although certainly the advice of successful, well-organized people to get complicated tasks out of the way first, when our energy is at its highest level makes sense, it is still not easy for some of us to follow through. I recall hearing in a sermon one time, that when we offer all we do each day to God with a loving heart, it takes each task we perform to a higher level, becomes more meaningful to us. Still it’s a challenge.
Even the small issues though, when neglected because we are slack in these matters, can grow to become insurmountable! An insignificant fray in fabric can become an irreparable tear. A small leak can become a damaging flood! A miscalculation in a bank statement can generate multiple excess charges. A slight untruth can result in a tangled, web of lies. An inconsiderate word can produce a break in a once solid relationship. At times a response without careful thought can lead us to a spot we do not want to be in. Denial can result in outright rejection. . . A careless neglect of God can evolve into a habit of living a life no longer God-centered.
But it doesn’t have to be that way! There is no need to procrastinate, for help is just a prayer away. Our God is waiting to help us stop the influx of negative threats to our spirit. We can start to practice greater diligence in doing the difficult first and in recognizing the value of performing even the most mundane of tasks – appreciating their value in the flow and necessity of living a more peaceful life. God is waiting for us to call on Him. With His grace we will be given a new perspective and direction.
Heavenly Father, we offer all we do to You! May we be more aware of the value of the tasks before us and may we attend to them filled with your grace.
