For the Lord God is a sun and shield . . . Psalm 84:11
After days of rain and storms, the sun shone gloriously outside my window, its light reflecting like glitter, off the droplets of water still clinging to the newborn, flourishing green leaves on the water-soaked trees. The evaporation could be seen with the naked eye; beaming streams of warmth flowed downward, permeating everything in its path, as upward rose a hazy mist. Drooping flowers raised their faces upward once again absorbing the energy radiating through them; their colors more vivid than they had been in days – just lovely! The grasses, greener still. Our concern for newly established seedlings was unfounded. The combination of additional water and sunlight had actually allowed the seed varieties to burst forth almost instantly, it seemed. How full of life everything appeared! Without the sun, all would have been lost to the drenching water.
In a few areas of our yard, underneath the protective shelter of the arms of several leafy trees, the plant life remained strong because nature’s coverlet stood guard. At the back of the yard, in a shed, nothing got wet. Shielded by a roof that rain could not penetrate, everything was protected from the damage of water. Tools and seeds remained in good condition, ready to do the work they were meant for, regardless of the weather.
How awesome to think of God as a “sun and shield,” to know He permeates our being, our very cells, our very souls - like the sun radiating on and through all His creation. To know He is our shield, our protector, our coverlet! Like a suit of armor, He will prevent anything unwanted from harming us. We are covered inside and out, safe and strong; well equipped to do the work we are intended for, no matter the storms that come our way. How good God is to us!
God, our life giving force and protector, keep us from all harm!
