He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the Rock,
my Savior.’ Psalm 89:26
During my Mother’s last days on earth, as I sat beside her holding her hand,
I would sing to her my favorite hymn, “On Eagles Wings.” Crying out to God in grief as I sang the words ‘my Rock in whom I trust,’ I would envision a boulder right there in front of me, and think about its sheer enormity and what the word symbolized. I would think about its strength and solidity, its size and its firmness, about its immovability, its steadfastness and the millions of years perhaps, that it had been present on this earth. I would think about this marvelous creation and its qualities attributed to God. Then I would reminisce about the huge ledge we had in our back yard when I was a child, and how I would love to scale it! My brother I would struggle to climb upon that rock and once at the top would sit and rest, feeling so secure in that special quiet place.
God is our rock, like a boulder or ledge right in front of us! His love for us is unwavering and firm; immovable - He can not be shifted away from us. His solidness and strength can be a sanctuary for us. He will hold us up and give us security when we need it, all the while remaining patiently there waiting for us to approach Him, to climb upon Him and rest in His eternally protective, comforting arms.
When the time came for Mom’s burial, because it was in a National Cemetery, the location of her resting place could not be preplanned. As I approached the spot I blinked back tears, for there before me in all it's glory just to her right, was a huge glistening boulder! It was the only one in the entire area! There it was - the rock I envisioned - my symbol of God’s unfailing love and presence, a permanent reminder of those special, final days with my Mother and an ever-present sign that He is with us always.
Oh God you are my Rock; the Rock in whom I trust!
