October 7
The memory of the righteous is a blessing, Proverbs 10:7
October comes and with it I am transported to so many places in my heart that it seems unbelievable. This month is filled with firsts and lasts, anniversaries and birthdays and mixed emotions. But woven through each memory is joy at having had the experiences, having had those moments in time to treasure; moments that strengthened my faith through endurance.
My Roger and I had our first date in October, we married in October and he retired in October. Our son and his wife, the first of our three to marry, were also married in October! And three of our grandchildren (one from each of our children!) were baptized on October 6, 2007; a day celebrated with many tears, for the miracle these three are! (As every baby is!) These little ones were born within days of each other really, and each one following quite challenging circumstances; circumstances that to an outsider would have appeared not believable to occur in one family. Our son had battled cancer; one of our daughters underwent brain surgery; and another, a life threatening blood disorder. Yet, God brought these beautiful babies into this world for us to cherish and celebrate! Truly miracles and blessings all the way around! I still shake my head in awe at these precious gifts God has blessed us with and continues to do so. As I have watched these three and their siblings/cousins grow, so does the love and amazement within me!
And birthdays! Where do I begin? My Roger, his sister, one of our sons-in-law, my dear Mom and my Dad, as well as many special friends who have gone before us. Celebrating the loves of my life, I reflect on the memory of my parents and friends, and the many gatherings we had in celebration of their lives. Needless to say, October is a month full of things to contemplate, thank God for and celebrate.
It seems most families have a particular month that is a bit more full than others with gifts from God to rejoice in and savor. During that time, it’s important to reflect on the lives of those gone before us as well, for it opens an opportunity to treasure more deeply the blessings God has placed in front of us right now, and lifts our hearts in gratitude to Him for those many blessings.
Heavenly Father we thank you for the blessing of memories, joyous moments that enrich our faith!
