. . . you shine as lights in the world. Philippians 2:15
Looking up in the midst of darkness a twinkle! The brightness of starlight draws the eye toward it and soon the darkness is forgotten; the only focus? That little speck of light! That little speck of light that to our vision appears brilliant in contrast to the blackness!
As a little girl, the area I grew up in was without street lighting. Outside at night especially in the summertime, when the trees were full of their glory shadowing the earth, darkness covered the area like a warm, close blanket. It was very hard to see walking down the path into our house without a flashlight. Inevitably though, there were times we arrived home later than planned. Unprepared for the sun to have shifted to the other side of the world, and stumbling, we carefully chose our steps under the mantle of starlight to arrive safely at the door. They were the best times as a child! I was thrilled by the mystery of the nighttime, intrigued by what might be there that I couldn’t see! But most of all I loved to hold my Father’s hand and gaze upward at the glorious sight in the sky! Usually we would stop at some point, and Dad would point out a particular constellation, or we’d perhaps see an airplane cutting its path through the sky like part of a “Connect the Dots” game! It was hard for me to break away from staring at the wondrous display before me. And the older I got the more I was drawn to God’s heavenly light, every season of the year, every season of life.
It is amazing how tiny specks of starlight can reach the earth and set it aglow, providing just enough light for us to find our way, especially when there is no artificial light present to obscure it. Away from the harshness of bright, man-made lighting, we are better able to view the multitude of stars emblazoned across the sky, even the tiniest ones we had no idea were there. Sometimes for us too, the light of good, kind and loving people can be hidden in the bold brightness of life, and their little glimmers of light, desperately trying to reach our souls, are difficult to see. But looking up in the midst of darkness, a twinkle! And all we have to do is take our Father’s hand in faith, knowing He will point out the way.
Thank you for the lights of family and friends who reflect your love, Oh Lord!
Dedicated to Steve Givens, whose inspiration and encouragement were instrumental in beginning my journey of publication, and continues to be! Thank you, Steve! May God bless you and your family always!
