July 7
I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; I will remember your wonders of old. Psalm 77:11
When I was a kid, my older sister’s birthday, which is today, along with the 4th of July, was celebrated and heralded the beginning of summer.
How we loved summer!! Lazy, warm days filled with walks in the woods with our older brother and our dog, picking blueberries in the cool early mornings, picnics, and days at the lake walking in the sand and swimming. The night skies were filled with starlight and fireflies, and we were serenaded with the melodic sounds of insects, frogs and little animals rustling about. We played hide and seek or would sit for hours in the darkness holding lit sticks of “punk” (and heaven forbid pretending they were cigarettes!) brushing away mosquitoes; all the while chatting about the future: what we wanted to be when we grew up, who we wanted to marry, how many children we would have one day. The little messages we wrote on each other’s backs were our own form of unsophisticated mini-massages and drew giggles and laughter.
Although it may sound idyllic, our childhood was certainly more complex than this, yet these are the things I remember most. These are some of the little deeds and wonders God placed in my relationship with her and my brother, that I cherish. Despite all the other wonderful memories God has placed in my life since, in every summer day and summer night those childhood memories continue to bring my sister and brother close.
When we consider the words, deeds and wonders, it may seem to imply something huge, out of reach for us. But all the little things that happen in our lives, those seemingly ordinary events that we recall, are treasures that one day will fill our heart with joy and wonder with the memory of them. These are some of the deeds and wonders that God has provided to show us His love for us. Every memory of His gifts to us reminds us of that love and brings us closer to Him. Simple, yet an extraordinary wonder.
Heavenly Father, God of all creation, you give us signs and wonders every single day! Open our hearts and minds to recall the memory and meaning of each one.
