But the Lord said to my father David, “You did well to consider building a house for my name; . . . “ I Kings 8:18
Such a grandiose vision King David had! Wouldn’t we all like to have the means to create something great and lasting to honor God? Although King David dreamed of creating a temple to honor God, it was not to be that he oversee the construction of what he dreamed of. His desire got the ball rolling, and just as the Lord told him, his dream was fulfilled by his son, King Solomon. It was enough that he shared that vision and through God’s grace; the seeds of that dream grew to fulfillment. All that God promised David, in time came to pass.
Creation begins with a thought or a dream, a tiny seed that has been planted within us by God, or someone else. We may not have the wealth or ability to honor God’s name with something as significant as a newly built place of worship, and in fact may feel the small bit we have to offer is quite inconsequential in comparison. But think about how many great things have been accomplished sparked by one small idea or outlandish notion even, in someone’s heart that was carried out by another. Think about the many churches, for example, we practice our faith in that have been built by our ancestors, who pooled their time and limited resources, bit by little bit to fulfill a dream of a place to worship Him! The longing to honor God has been placed in our hearts, and if we share it, cannot help but grow to extend to our children, grandchildren, friends and communities - to all those around us!
What a gift to have this desire to worship His name in whatever way we possibly can, knowing that once that seed is planted, our heart’s desire cannot help but continue to fruition. And isn’t it awesome when we recognize that we have it within ourselves to create something lasting and great to honor God, in this very “temple” He has given us? This “temple” He has provided to carry us through this life He has gifted us with; a life that will be complete in His time.
Father, help us to recognize the importance of the dreams and desires we have within us to honor you, and understand they will be fulfilled in your time, not ours.
I ask you to please keep Ilona, a very special friend mine, in your prayers. Thank you, my dear blog friends.
