Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly . . . as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16
Darkness still presses against the windowpanes, but one lonely little bird is singing with all he has, delighted that it is morning! Soon, a chorus of birds is serenading the earth as they rejoice in the sunrise, creating hope that Spring is on our doorstep!
The teapot whistles. It’s song signaling the warmth and comfort that the early morning sweet, liquid nourishment fills us with. How we savor that first sip!
In the distance the whistle of a slowing or departing train echoes on and on; singing throughout the town that work is waiting, there are places to go, and there is reliable transportation available to get there!
Church bells ring. Their melodic, chiming, clang beckoning all to pay attention for a moment and we wonder what might be going on there. Is there a wedding today? Is someone returning home to God? Perhaps we may even consider a visit.
The wind shifts and its musical, whispering or whistling voice announces movement in the atmosphere that is bringing about some sort of change. Cooler air? A soothing breeze? A season change? A storm perhaps? We listen for the knowing sound that signals good or bad weather.
Water flows, splashing over multi-shaped and varied color rocks, rushing down stream with a bubbling, swirling, swishing refrain that brings life to everything around it. Its refreshing voice calls to us!
From the radio a song tugs at us, recapturing a wistful moment in time; a special instance remembered intensely as the precious memory of it fills our souls. In a flash we are back there.
Chills run down our spines listening to the choir music in church; the beauty of it filling us with joy and emotion. Suddenly we become aware of how small one voice can be - but the resonance all together? Awe inspiring!
In the background of our lives we hear the family member who regularly spontaneously is singing and or whistling throughout the day. There is an aura of happiness and peace that seems to surround them and is gifted to us. In the presence of singing, our hearts and spirits can not help but be lifted up with joy.
With gratitude we sing. With appreciation we listen to the sounds of heavenly music that surround us. With thankfulness for the gift of our ability to use our voices, we lift our songs and hearts up to God. Our heart song is prayer.
May our humble songs, filled with gratitude, reach your ears, oh God.
