December 20
Ears that hear and eyes that see – the Lord has made them both. Proverbs 20:12
This beautiful season of Advent is nearing fulfillment. How quickly the weeks have passed as we prepare for the birth of Christ! Steeped in traditions handed down by our families, our religion and society’s influence, we carry on with the activities that symbolize our faith. We light our advent candles each week as we journey forward. Our trees are displayed with treasured, ornamental memories and lights of hope of the coming of the Holy Spirit, brightly shine in our widows. Beautiful Christmas music - carols of faith and nostalgic melodies - fill the air as we search for the perfect gift for the people in our lives– a gift as a sign of our love and appreciation for all they are to us.
Christmas may be upon us, but right where we are, are we really listening? Are we really observing? Are we really using those eyes and ears God gave to us? We do not have to go far or accomplish great feats of generosity to provide what is lacking around us. Donations of money, time, food, clothing and toys for the less fortunate are things most do during this season of giving. But in the rush of gift buying and decorating, believe it or not we can become disconnected with those closest to us. At times in our busyness we can without meaning to, become indifferent - deaf and blind to the needs right before us – right in our own families. What is really echoing in the sound of a voice? Do we hear the heartbreak of a child who does not understand their parents’ decision about behavioral consequences? Do we hear the stress and strain of young parents, and older ones too, who are overburdened with responsibility? Do we see the sadness on the face of a family member who feels life is passing them by? Do we see the worry in the eyes of the elderly ones who faces another year of uncertain health and circumstance? Do we see the fatigue on a loved one’s face after another day of additional hours of work? Can we not open our eyes and ears – these gifts God has given us – with depth, selflessness and love, and take the risk of opening our hearts to their needs?
Before all the gifts, all the acts of public charity, we have to begin giving at home first. It is up to each of us to demonstrate privately to those we love - God’s love. It may not be easy to take that extra moment or two during all our busyness, but the reward is great. In this season of giving, let us give to those in need, beginning right at home. Open your eyes and ears to what is most important to those you love and to God. Isn’t that what Christmas is about?
Heavenly Father open our eyes and ears to the needs all around us and give us the courage to respond. Abba! Father! We are yours!
