But who is able to build him a house, since heaven, even highest heaven, cannot contain him? Who am I to build a house for him, except as a place to make offerings before him? 2 Chronicles 2:6
The past few weeks I have been fascinated watching a webcam at SpyOnABird.com, observing bluebirds, nesting, laying their eggs, keeping them warm, hatching those eggs and now, feeding their young with untiring effort. It is simply remarkable! In the safety of this little birdhouse these tiny creatures grow, gain strength, and prepare to spread their wings. Their house is not a permanent residence though, rather just a place to prepare, until they are ready to leave this tiny box they’ve called home. Nothing it seems can hold them back or contain them there when they are ready. Despite or maybe because of, all the nurturing protection they have been given, when the time is right for them to go out and face the world, every ounce of energy is used to make that happen.
Studying these beautiful little birds, makes me think about how we try and try to contain our God; to box Him in with our idea of who we want Him to be and where we want Him to be. Usually we want His presence with us when it is convenient only. Heaven forbid, He sees or hears some of what we don’t want made known! Yet we cannot control His being there or contain Him! Our churches and Holy dwelling places cannot hold Him exclusively inside! God is with us everywhere and always, whether we are ready to receive Him or not; He is there.
What a comfort this is as we slowly grow in our understanding of all that is important to our spiritual well being, gaining strength with each new day, with the hope of spreading our wings toward a new adventure one day. Nurtured by people of faith who influence us, we too are getting ready to leave this comfortable, little world we have known; this life we have experienced that we may feel has actually boxed us in, in many ways, but has given us opportunity after opportunity to work toward being ready to fly forward to another place that God has prepared for us.
God of all creation, we are so blessed to live in this wondrous world you have given us where we may learn and live until we are called to return to you!
