But if God so clothes the grass which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you . . . And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be or anxious mind. Luke 12: 28-29
We are an anxious Nation! Today it is estimated that over 18 percent of all adult individuals in the United States suffer from some type of anxiety disorder1. And why wouldn’t we have anxiety? With our high pressure jobs, time restraints, over commitments, insecure economic environment, demands of family and social obligations, for many there is too much to cope with, and the stress level increases. The stress of coping with the unrelenting daily commotion in our lives can bring with it a subtle underlying state of anxiousness; as many of us recognize so well. Children too, are experiencing the pressure. Many are over-stimulated by intense extra curricula schedules, competition to keep up with their peers and with the demands for academic achievement, let alone all the electronic equipment that is often used as a relaxation technique rather than physical exercise. Some stress and subsequent anxiety are normal reactions in life, but in excesses it becomes problematic.
At every turn, we can find well meaning paraprofessionals and of course professionals, ready to help us cope with this ever-growing mental health issue. From reading materials touting the only answer, to support groups, and for some whose anxiety is beyond their control, to qualified medical personnel who prescribe medications; there is a host of methods to relieve our state of mind, for a price. Basic psychology can help us understand some of the many circumstances which have the propensity of producing the many causes of anxiety, from simple frustration to life altering events which we have little or no control over. Stress and anxiety are a fact of life, but an untreated anxiety disorder is detrimental to our well-being, inhibiting us from living the full, productive life God has planned for us.
So, what is it that we need to keep a handle on stress and anxiety? Where can we find true peace within that will keep us free from undue anxiety? All the basic things that help promote good mental health, starting with doing our best to maintain good physical health, and for some the importance of seeking professional help when they, or someone close to them, recognizes that their anxiety is too much for them to handle. But above all else, Luke reminds us that it is in our relationship with God, who stands firmly beside us supporting our weakened bodies and spirits, that we are strengthened. Through the peace of prayer, we are better able to make decisions and choices that promote well-being and health of body and mind. In faith we can rest in Him whose we are. In faith we know that we are not alone in whatever struggle we are in. With God gently leading us forward we will find peace of heart.
Father, the source of our peace and strength, when we are stressed and overwhelmed with life, please stay beside us.
